Permutations; an Expanded Cinema Installation | Jim Kroesen

This expanded cinema installation presented by Jim Kroesen in the South gallery at Propeller engages with the viewer in multiple ways: sight, sound, and even smell. The work utilizes seven 35mm film projectors, which project edited film loops made from film stock from old NFB and school board films. These loops are projected onto a mylar screen, offering a dynamic collage of film fragments, filters, and print negatives, spliced and layered over one another. The various lengths of film loops and use of static/non-static imagery allow for the composition of the piece to move in and out of sync, morphing into endless permutations. The piece’s sound allows room for the unexpected and provides a surprise element as the sound bites from the various film clips overlay one another, creating an audio-collage. The smell component is much more subtle—as projectors run at high temperatures, their internal fans push out excess heat, thereby expelling the scent of the film stock, machine lubricants, and electrical/metallic materials. This smell may remind viewers of a certain age who grew up with film projectors in the home or classroom.
The piece constantly evolves due to the fragility of the film stock—film loops often break, so new film must be edited and spliced, altering the composition, both in terms of imagery and sound. In an age where people relate to the world through their cell phones, the work strives to push the limits as to what one can “capture,” as each composition is different—one image is not able to encapsulate it all. Permutations invites the viewer to experience a unique piece, specific to the time and place of its viewing, never to be repeated again.
